Bob Bailey stars as detective George Valentine, a likable guy who is confident in his abilities and willing to give just about anything a shot. Frances Robinson gives life and allure to the character of Claire Brooks, George's girl (and girl Friday). Rounding out the regular trio is Lt. Riley, Valentine's reluctant right-hand man down at police headquarters, played to the hilt by Wally Maher, with an endearing mix of frustration and admiration. Receiving urgent requests by mail each week, the words "Dear Mr. Valentine" are followed by invitations to investigate missing person cases, robberies, cover-ups, family secrets, love triangles, suicides, and so-called accidents. George and Brooksie oblige, busting up murder plots, rackets, and romances. The plights of the wrongly accused, wrongly convicted, and wrongly intentioned are handled with humor, charm, and daring in 20 digitally restored and remastered episodes. Episodes include: "Friendship Club (aka Island in the Lake)" 05-31-48, "Have Some Excitement" 06-07-48, "A Piece of Publicity (aka Hired for a Bodyguard)" 06-14-48, "Problem Child (aka Unfit Mother)" 06-21-48, "Mr. Korawski - American (aka The Racket)" 06-28-48, "Murder Me Twice (aka The Man Who Was Murdered Twice)" 07-05-48, "A Close Call" 07-12-48, "Cry Murder (aka A Deadman Who Was a Murderer)" 07-19-48, "The Money Maker" 08-02-48, "The Perfect Specimen" 08-09-48, "The Ghost on Bliss Terrace" 08-16-48, "The Corpse That Took a Powder" 08-23-48, "A Minor Case of Murder" 08-30-48, "The Impatient Redhead" 09-06-48, "The Father Who Had Nothing to Say" 09-13-48, "The Hearse Was Painted Pink" 09-20-48, "Death Wears a Gay Sport Jacket" 10-18-48, "The Flowers That Smelled of Murder" 11-01-48, "Murder - It's a Gift" 11-08-48, "Stand-In for Murder" 11-29-48. 1. Nervous flyer Emma is sitting on a turbulent plane. She really thinks that this could be her last moment. So, naturally enough, she starts telling the man sitting next to her - quite a dishy American, but she's too frightened to notice - all her secrets. How she scans the backs of intellectual books and pretends she's read them. How she's not sure if she has a G-spot, and whether her boyfriend could find it anyway. How she feels like a fraud at work - everyone uses the word 'operational' all the time but she hasn't a clue what it means. How she once threw a troublesome client file in the bin. If ever there was a bare soul, it's hers. She survives the flight, of course, and the next morning the famous founding boss of the whole mega corporation she works for is coming for a look at the UK branch. As he walks around, Emma looks up and realises...It's the man from the plane. What will he do with her secrets? He knows them all - but she doesn't know a single one of his. What do Postman Pat, Tommy Cooper, Norman Wisdom and George Best have in common with being abandoned in a Costa Rican jungle after a severe bout of flatulence? Indeed, how are they also connected to trying to buy an Australian brewery just to get a beer, owning twenty-two cars, an American soccer team and a Swiss mail-order pornography company? The common feature is of course a certain Richard Wakeman. The Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star takes you, the privileged reader, on a trip of absurd excess, a cultural car crash of side-splitting hilarity and an unforgettable glimpse (again) into the life of one of Britain's most legendary showmen, rock stars and all-time great raconteurs.

“A large, lavishly inventive novel . . . an American descendant of The Arabian Nights . . . erudite and artful entertainment.”—The New York Times Book Review   At a Manhattan planetarium in 1965, ten-year-old Enzo is whisked away from his young adoptive aunt, Mala. His abductor turns out to be a blood relative: his great-uncle Junius Samax, a wealthy former gambler who lives in a converted Las Vegas hotel surrounded by a priceless art collection and a host of fascinating, idiosyncratic guests. In Samax’s magical world, Enzo receives a unique education and pieces together the mystery of his mother’s life and the complicated history of his adoption. Back in New York, Mala only knows that Enzo has disappeared. After a yearlong search proves fruitless, she enlists in the Navy Nursing Corps and on a hospital ship off Vietnam falls in love with a wounded B-52 navigator, who disappears on his next mission. Devastated again, Mala embarks on a restless, adventurous journey around the world, hoping to overcome the losses that have transformed her life.   Fusing imagination, scholarship, and suspense with remarkable narrative skill, Nicholas Christopher builds a story of tremendous scope, an epic tale of love and destiny, as he traces the intricate latticework of Mala’s and Enzo’s lives. Each remains separate from each other but tied in ways they cannot imagine—until the final miraculous chapter of this extraordinary novel.   “A writer of remarkable gifts.”—The Washington Post Book World   “This labyrinthine novel . . . is animated by an encompassing lust for beauty.”—The New Yorker   “[Nicholas] Christopher is North America’s García Márquez; Borges with emotional weight. . . . This is one of those rare books that, by connecting the stars, catches you in its web.”—The Globe and Mail Includes an excerpt of Nicholas Christopher’s  Tiger Rag
