I, [name], do hereby swear, before the Great and Living God, that during my engagement, and while I am an employee of Russell, Majors, and Waddell, I will, under no circumstances, use profane language, that I will drink no intoxicating liquors, that I will not quarrel or fight with any other employee of the firm, and that in every respect I will conduct myself honestly, be faithful to my duties, and so direct all my acts as to win the confidence of my employers, so help me God. (The oath taken by Pony Express riders) Although it was only in operation for about 18 months, the Pony Express remains the most famous and romanticized mailing system in American history. It still instantly brings to mind all of the old themes of the untamed frontier and the Wild West. Starting shortly before the Civil War erupted across the United States, the Pony Express connected the east and west by having riders deliver mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California - a route set up by previous explorations and a system of relay stations and waypoints. When working in perfect unison, the Pony Express dramatically cut down the time it took to travel to California, with the mail traveling nearly 1,900 miles to California just 10 days after the beginning of the journey in Missouri. Naturally, the Pony Express also ran from west to east as well. Of course part of the allure of the Pony Express is in the way it challenged riders and horses, which ties it to Americans' fond visions of the frontier as an untamed landscape that only the most pioneering and rugged individuals could survive. At the same time, the Pony Express needed small riders to reduce the weight being carried by the horses. 1. Language: English. Narrator: James McSorley. West Like Lightning: The Brief, Legendary Ride ...

The thrilling narrative history of one of the most enduring icons of the American West, the Pony Express, from the number-one New York Times best-selling co-author of American Sniper - an exciting tale of daring young men pushing limits to the extremes across the vast, rugged, and unsettled American West. In the spring of 1860 on the eve of a civil war that threatened to tear the country apart, two Americans conceived of an audacious plan for linking the nation’s two coasts, thereby joining its present with its future. All that stood in the way was a 1,900 miles of uninhabited desert, ice-capped mountains, oceanic plains roamed by hostile Indian tribes, whitewater-choked rivers, and rugged, unsettled frontier wilderness where "civilized" men where outnumbered a million to one by grizzlies, mountain lions, wolves, bison, rattlesnakes, and more. Many deemed their revolutionary scheme impossible. Run by the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company, the Pony Express as it came to be known, would use a relay system of daring horseback riders to ferry mail and small packages halfway across a continent in just 10 days.  The challenges they faced were enormous, yet the Pony Express succeeded, delivering tens of thousands of letters at record speed. The service would quickly become the most direct means of communication between the Eastern United States and its Western territories, helping to firmly connect them to the Union. West Like Lightning traces the development of the Pony Express and follows it from its start in St. Joseph, Missouri - the edge of the civilized world in the mid-19th century - 1,500 miles west to Sacramento. Jim DeFelice - who traveled the Express’s route in his research - plumbs the legends, myths, and true facts of the service, viewing it within the context of the American story and exploring its lasting relevance today. Though the Pony Express was eclipsed by the telegraph in less than 1. Language: English. Narrator: John Pruden. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/harp/007166/bk_harp_007166_sample.mp3. Our American West: Volume 2 , Hörbuch, Digital,...

Our American West, Volume 2 begins with America’s first colonizers, the prairie dogs, and how out on the ranges they were so hated by ranchers that they were almost made extinct. Conestoga Wagons were once called “prairie schooners” crossing America long before the famed Pony Express. The indomitable courage of Sarah Winnemucca, the “Prairie Princess” rivals that of a tall Swede named Showshoe Thompson who skied the snowy river passes of the Sierra Nevadas for over twenty years packing the mail and saving lives. Almost no one knows of Esther Hobart Morris, but Wyoming proudly claims her as its Mother of Women’s Suffrage. Marvel at the transcontinental railroad race between the Union Pacific’s Chinese laborers and the predominately Irish Central Pacific Railroad crews and about how a one-armed Civil War hero named John Wesley Powell was the first explorer to run the mighty Grand Canyon deep within its corridors of stone. Doctors called “sawbones” struggled to save their patients with little more than poultices and prayers. Tom Horn was a tall, handsome hired gun but did he hang for a crime he did commit? Are mules smarter than horses? Clay Allison was every bit as deadly as Billy the Kid. Native American stories featuring Chief Sitting Bull. Buffalo Soldiers, The Ghost Dancers and Mark Twain, Frederick Remington and The Infamous Bandit Queens round out Our American West, Volume 2. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Rusty Nelson.
