The exciting adventures that slipped through the pages of history about Black Cowboys, Pioneers, Soldiers and Mountain Men are resurrected in Once Upon a Time in the Black West, a collection of beautifully woven short stories authored by Dr. Robert H. Miller. When you read along with the Old Cowboy narrating his adventures with his trusty canine companion Sundown, you’ll be drawn back into a different place and era. When the Old Cowboy speaks in a jargon that reflects his western heritage, you’ll root for the likes of Nat Love. At the tender age of fifteen in 1869, he rode into Dodge City Kansas in its heyday and was enamored at his first glimpse of cowboys and decided he wouldn’t be anything in life other than this. Again, there is an interesting story about how a young man of nineteen, half Cherokee-Indian and half African-American turned to a life of crimes. He watched his Native American family gets swallowed up by America’s expansion into the West. After attending the Carlisle School for Indians in Pennsylvania, young Crawford changed his name to “Cherokee Bill.” And the last story in this enthralling volume, the legend of “stagecoach” Mary Fields.“After growing up on a plantation with her childhood friend, they reconnected thirty years later and she got Mary a job as a stagecoach driver carrying the United States mail. This is the first volume of many more thrilling stories to come in Once Upon a Time in the Black West. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Robert H. Miller. An American Mail-Order Bride Christmas Collection (American Mail-Order Brides) ab 3.49 EURO
The first collection of short fiction from Jeffrey Eugenides, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Virgin Suicides and Middlesex.Jeffrey Eugenides's bestselling novels have shown him to be an astute observer of the crises of adolescence, self-discovery, family love, and what it means to be American. The stories in Fresh Complaint explore equally rich-and intriguing-territory.Ranging from the bitingly reproductive antics of "Baster" to the dreamy, moving account of a young traveler's search for enlightenment in "Air Mail" (selected by Annie Proulx for Best American Short Stories), this collection presents characters in the midst of personal and national emergencies. We meet a failed poet who, envious of other people's wealth during the real-estate bubble, becomes an embezzler, a clavichordist whose dreams of art flounder under the obligations of marriage and fatherhood, and, in Fresh Complaint, a high school student whose wish to escape the strictures of her immigrant family lead her to a drastic decision that upends the life of a middle-aged British physicist.Narratively compelling, beautifully written, and packed with a density of ideas despite their fluid grace, these stories chart the development and maturation of a major American writer.
After the Plague is a formidable achievement. It is hip, slick and witty'. SUNDAY TELEGRAPH '...A mercurial craftsman mustering some of his most assured work'. FT ' Boyle has the ability to create devastating situations, lighten them with a satirical gleam and then twist them into the kind of joke that makes your stomach hurt'. DAILY MAIL '...Boyle writes so beautifully...it always feels natural, never forced'. GUARDIAN Maverick, unpredictable and accomplished, T.C. Boyle has been called the 'trickster of American letters'. AFTER THE PLAGUE is his latest collection of short stories - here are tales that superbly veer from the psychological to the slapstick, from surrealism to satire, once again proving him to be one of America's most formidable writers.
