The spellbinding story of an American lawyer who takes on a nearly impossible case - the defense of an African freedom fighter against his corrupt government's charge of murder. Damon Pierce's life has just reached a defining moment: a gifted California lawyer, he's being divorced by his wife and his work often seems soulless. Then he receives a frantic e-mail from Marissa Brand Okari - a woman he loved years ago - and decides to risk everything to respond to her plea for help. Marissa's husband, Bobby Okari, is the charismatic leader of a freedom movement in the volatile west African nation of Luandia, which is being torn apart by the world's craving for its vast supply of oil. Bobby's outspoken opposition to the exploitation of his homeland by PetroGlobal - a giant American oil company with close ties to Luandia's brutal government - has enraged General Savior Karama, the country's autocratic ruler. After Bobby leads a protest rally during a full eclipse of the sun, everyone in his home village is massacred by government troops. And now Bobby has been arrested and charged with the murder of three PetroGlobal workers. Still drawn to Marissa, Pierce agrees to defend Bobby, hoping to save both Bobby and Marissa from almost certain death. But the lethal politics of Luandia may cost Pierce his life instead. Culminating in a dramatic show trial and a desperate race against time, Eclipse combines a thrilling narrative with a vivid look at the human cost of the global lust for oil. Here is Richard North Patterson at his compelling best, confirming his place as our most provocative author of popular fiction. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Peter Francis James. The exciting adventures that slipped through the pages of history about Black Cowboys, Pioneers, Soldiers and Mountain Men are resurrected in Once Upon a Time in the Black West, a collection of beautifully woven short stories authored by Dr. Robert H. Miller. When you read along with the Old Cowboy narrating his adventures with his trusty canine companion Sundown, you’ll be drawn back into a different place and era. When the Old Cowboy speaks in a jargon that reflects his western heritage, you’ll root for the likes of Nat Love. At the tender age of fifteen in 1869, he rode into Dodge City Kansas in its heyday and was enamored at his first glimpse of cowboys and decided he wouldn’t be anything in life other than this. Again, there is an interesting story about how a young man of nineteen, half Cherokee-Indian and half African-American turned to a life of crimes. He watched his Native American family gets swallowed up by America’s expansion into the West. After attending the Carlisle School for Indians in Pennsylvania, young Crawford changed his name to “Cherokee Bill.” And the last story in this enthralling volume, the legend of “stagecoach” Mary Fields.“After growing up on a plantation with her childhood friend, they reconnected thirty years later and she got Mary a job as a stagecoach driver carrying the United States mail. This is the first volume of many more thrilling stories to come in Once Upon a Time in the Black West. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Robert H. Miller. From the author of We Are Called to Rise comes a novel about the interconnected lives of four women in Las Vegas, each of whom experiences a life-changing moment at a classic casino nightclub. Spanning the six decades when Las Vegas grew from a dusty gambling town into the melting-pot metropolis it is today, 'Round Midnight is the story of four women - one who falls in love, one who gets lucky, one whose heart is broken, and one who chooses happiness - whose lives change at the Midnight Room. June Stein and her husband open the El Capitan casino in the 1950s and rocket to success after hiring a charismatic black singer to anchor their nightclub. Their fast-paced lifestyle runs aground as racial tensions mount. Honorata leaves the Philippines as a mail order bride to a Chicago businessman, then hits a jackpot at the Midnight Room when he takes her on a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Engracia, a Mexican immigrant whose lucky find at the Midnight Room leads to heartbreak, becomes enmeshed in Honorata's secret when she opens her employer's door to that Chicago businessman - and his gun. And then there is Coral, an African American teacher who struggles with her own mysterious past. A favor for Honorata takes her to the Midnight Room, where she hits a jackpot of another kind. Mining the rich territory of motherhood and community, 'Round Midnight is a story that mirrors the social transformation of our nation. The Hopeless Continent?

Poverty, disease, corruption, AIDS - all these negative connotations are traditionally representative of Africa, overall painting it as a hopeless continent. Research has shown that the international media is most often guilty of this. However, recent academic inquiry has been concerned with how African media represents itself. This book merges both angles of inquiry, by assessing how Time, The Economist and Financial Mail magazines - one American, one European and one South African - report on African politics, economics and HIV/AIDS stories. These three categories encompass the bulk of events that become news on Africa. The longitudinal analysis offered in this book shows that positive and somewhat mixed representations of Africa and its countries abound in these texts, even though negative portrayals still seem to be the norm. This analysis then highlights that all is not hopeless for Africa, but certainly indicates that journalistic practice towards the continent must change. Researchers of media and politics, particularly the African dimension, will find this book most useful.

Park City was incorporated in 1907 as a Tennessee municipality. From its inception in the 1890s, Park City became a melting pot of Greek, Swiss, Jewish, African American, German, Italian, and Scotch-Irish entrepreneurs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Cal Johnson, a former slave and resident of Park City, became one of the wealthiest men in Tennessee. Johnson invested in race horses, taverns, and real estate, and he operated a race track in Burlington on the eastern edge of Park City. The half-mile track is still intact as a city street known as Speedway Circle. Today, Park City is a virtual museum of Victorian homes designed by mail-order architect and Park City resident George F. Barber. The residence he designed and built for himself still stands on Washington Avenue. Other highlights include Park City's pre--'Civil War history and important trade expositions of national significance hosted in Park City from 1910 to 1913. In 1917, Park City was annexed into the city of Knoxville, but the community retained its cultural and historical identity for many years around Chilhowee Park. Once a privately owned estate and lake. Chilhowee Park became Park City's social center, welcoming such notable figures as Teddy Roosevelt, William Jennings Bryan, and Louis Armstrong.
