American history is often presented as a tale of dynamic movers and shakers who subdued an untamed wilderness on the way to forging a great nation - all the while leaving philosophy for their European counterparts. But this history neglects the philosophical underpinnings of America. As these 36 lectures demonstrate, America has borne the imprint of influential thinkers from its earliest days, from the Reformation theology of John Calvin to the Enlightenment philosophy of John Locke. Throughout this epic historical journey, you´ll explore the many ways this nation has answered the question: What is an American? Professor Kobylka traces the many answers that have been offered showing how the idea of ´´We the People´´ has changed and expanded far beyond the Founding Fathers´ original conception. You´ll navigate America´s ever-shifting political landscape and see how the great political trends in American history can be understood as variations on a single theme: the philosophy of liberalism, this conception that government is the source of some of our most deeply valued political notions. You´ll also meet the great men and women who, over the course of American history, have molded political thought and policy. This is your opportunity to gain a deep understanding both of the nation´s past and how this rich political history continues to influence the current day. Even if you´ve studied American history before, you´ll encounter something new: a unique synthesis of viewpoints, ideas, and events that´s enlightening and compelling. In 1855 the westward expansion of slavery was all but assured. Pro-slavery forces had swarmed the newly-opened territory of Kansas and packed its legislature. They had the support of all three branches of the federal government and the Army. Yet within two years, a ragtag free-state militia, led by a wild-eyed crusader named John Brown, scored a series of tactical victories that helped turn the tide in Kansas - while putting America on the path to civil war. Of all the men in Brown´s army, one stands out: the young Jewish immigrant August Bondi, a freedom fighter since the age of 14. With a scrupulous eye toward history, author Aaron Barnhart brings this remarkable story to life and shows how a young man´s conscience, like John Brown´s broadsword, can cut both ways. From Vienna´s barricades to bleeding Kansas to the Civil War, August Bondi was continuously engaged in the struggle for freedom for half of his young adult life. As an old man, he wrote down what he remembered, and author Aaron Barnhart closely followed Bondi´s autobiography in writing Firebrand. Barnhart also drew upon the 1958 novel Border Hawk: August Bondi, by children´s author Lloyd Alexander (winner of the Newbery Medal and National Book Award), to bring Bondi´s story back to life. The story begins in 1848. The Bondi family is leaving for a better life in America. But 15-year-old Anschl doesn´t want to go. He´s found his life´s purpose in Vienna, fighting on the barricades against a tyrant king. In America, Anschl tries to put his past behind him, changing his name to August and seeking adventure aboard a Texas riverboat. But there is a new tyranny in his adopted land called slavery, and its presence all around him rekindles the fire in the young freedom fighter. It leads him to Kansas Territory and the adventure of his life alongside the notorious abolitionist John Brown. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Aaron Barnhart. On a snowy morning in January 1910, the Alaska Steamship Company´s Farallon struck Black Reef in Cook Inlet. The vessel carried no wireless radio to broadcast an SOS. Thirty-eight men scrambled into lifeboats, to be cast up on the rugged shore where they huddled under make-shift tents constructed from the Farallon´s sails. Exposed to a bitter northern winter with meager equipment and clothing, a disturbing awareness sank in-rescuers may arrive too late. In a daring attempt to find help, six men launched a lifeboat on the open sea. During two months of relentless travail, the brave mariners were all but given up for lost. One of the stranded men created a startling record of the shipwrecked party. John E. Thwaites, an amateur photographer and the ship´s mail clerk, shot dozens of haunting, stark images of the ice-shrouded derelict, the castaways´ barren camp, and frostbitten men with burlap-wrapped feet. Lloyd brings to life a riveting tale of hardy seafaring men and tough sourdoughs who survived cold and despair against difficult odds in Alaska´s stormswept wilderness. 1. Language: English. When Why Are We in Vietnam? was published in 1967, almost twenty years after The Naked and the Dead, the critical response was ecstatic. The novel fully confirmed Mailer´s stature as one of the most important figures in contemporary American literature. Now, a new edition of this exceptional work serves as further affirmation of its timeless quality. Narrated by Ranald (´´D.J.´´) Jethroe, Texas´s most precocious teenager, on the eve of his departure to fight in Vietnam, this story of a hunting trip in Alaska is both brilliantly entertaining and profoundly thoughtful. 1.
